There are many resources, articles, and software programs out there to try and help companies engage with employees. Even more so during the pandemic and the increase in remote work. But all of these resources boil down to the same basic tool: Communication.
A recent Gallup poll shows that 70% of employee engagement is a direct result of great leadership. That same Gallup poll shows that the lack of employee engagement can reduce profits by 23% and cause a 64% increase in safety accidents. Employee engagement starts with communication. In this Meith Minute we will discuss ways to improve communication in the office, in the field, or even with those working remotely, to improve employee engagement.
Improving communication with employees, through in person or virtual meetings, one on one discussions, newsletters, team building activities, impromptu conversations, or with open access to helpful resources, are all integral in building up and maintaining employee engagement.
Here are some starting points:
- Define goals – clear, concise goals allow an employee to plan, manage and take ownership of the goal. Learn more about communicating SMART goals here: https://www.meithsolutions.info/how-smart-are-s-m-a-r-t-goals/
- Create a sense of belonging – being uncomfortable or feeling unwelcome does not promote productivity. Discuss with employees how we are more connected than we know, how we share common goals and common interests. Our diversity is an asset and should be supported.
- Create a social recognition program – recognizing employees doesn’t mean a large out of pocket expense, it means sharing positive reviews, customer feedback, publicly acknowledging achievements. Creating an environment for achievement is motivating.
- Build trust through honest conversation – employees know when you are not authentic. Being honest builds trust and confidence in the company and team projects.
- Be accepting of feedback – open communication is two way communication, when employees have a voice they have a stronger sense of community and become more involved in outcomes. Create employee forums, or frequent pulse surveys.
- Create team socializing opportunities – find ways for employees to socialize, it helps build teamwork and increases productivity. Use friendly competition, team building resources and interactive games. Find team building special days at our Date Stones.
- Encourage innovation and creativity – employees have a lot more to offer a company than just task completion, utilize all of the skills and resources that your employees bring to the table. Allow them to participate in job-crafting, open brainstorming, be a meeting runner. Take this time to be open to new ideas.
Improving employee engagement and productivity starts with meaningful communication. Employers lose about $2,246 every year, for every disengaged employee. Disengaged employees undermine good employees, call off from work more often, and contribute to more customer complaints.
